Week 4: Brainstorming

This week  my team met up to discuss the group project. Iamsquidward has taken the role of the leader in the group, she’s the one who set up the group chat and the calls we had. We are using an Instagram group chat as our main form of communication. We decided to use this forum as we all already had and use Instagram so we are familiar with it. It also allows us to text and send images easily. The first time we met up as a group we used second life, and while this worked fine for our initial meeting we thought that it would be easier to use another form of communication for our future meetings. We decided to use zoom to meet up this time as it is a lot more personal and makes communicating ideas much easier since we can physically see and hear each other. Another advantage that the zoom meeting had was that we can share screens, this allowed Iamsquidward to share her screen to use as a whiteboard. As we discussed the brief and brainstormed different ideas for the project she made a mind map using Microsoft whiteboard and shared the screen so that we could all see. I think this worked really well as we could visualize our ideas and add to them.

This is a screenshot Iamsquidward took of the brainstorm we made which she emailed to all of us.

We all contributed to the mind map by sharing our thoughts and opinions. We looked into different areas that could be of interest to the project. Some areas we thought we could explore were the role that social media might have on the workplace in the future, with the increase of influencer jobs that are being created. Another area we looked at was The role of technology in the future. As discussed in Special Report (2016) The Impact on Jobs: Automation and Anxiety The Economist, many jobs such as office work and manual labour could be replaced by machinery as technology continues to advance, this would mean that many people in these fields would lose their jobs and would need to find work elsewhere. Another area that is very topical at the moment would be the impact of covid 19 and how that might affect the design of future workplaces and could encourage an increase in remote work and working from home.

We haven’t decided on a particular area just yet but we were thinking that we could divide the workload by having each group member focus on one area that we brainstormed and perhaps we could all talk about a continuous theme such as the impact of mental/physical health within our individual areas. I think it’s important that we all communicate clearly which person will be doing which task, as mentioned in Costa, D. (2016, February 5). 5 Steps to Build a Productive and Tight-Knit Remote Team, each team member “must be aware of not only how their tasks contribute to the overall goal but exactly how they can accomplish those tasks”. During the week I looked at some of past pupils presentations and the different ways in which they presented. I mentioned to the group that I thought presenting our project in google slides could work well since it would be easy for us to gather our information in a shared google slide document. When presenting we could share a link to the document and talk over our slides.

That’s all for now, until next week.
